CV keywords that matter, by industry

Updated 2 September 2026 · 7 min read

There is no universal keyword list. The right keywords for a role are sitting in the job ad you are answering — the skill is extracting them and proving them.

Pull keywords from the ad, not a template

Read the ad and mark every noun phrase that describes a tool, method, qualification or responsibility. Anything repeated, or listed under 'essential', is weighted highest. That marked list is your target.

What the clusters look like in practice

  • Technology: named languages and frameworks, cloud platforms, CI/CD, testing approach, system design, on-call ownership.
  • Finance: IFRS or UK GAAP, month-end close, forecasting and variance analysis, audit liaison, ERP names, ACA/ACCA/CIMA.
  • Healthcare: professional registration, safeguarding, patient pathways, clinical governance, named systems such as EPR.
  • Marketing: paid acquisition channels, CRM and automation tools, attribution, lifecycle, CRO, named analytics stacks.
  • Operations and logistics: SLA management, demand planning, continuous improvement, WMS names, health and safety compliance.

Prove each keyword with a number

A keyword with evidence outranks a keyword in a list. 'Forecasting' becomes 'Rebuilt the 12-month cash forecast, cutting variance from 14% to 4%'. The keyword is present, and the recruiter reading it has a reason to call.

Where to put them

  • Your professional summary: the three or four terms defining the role.
  • Skills section: tools and named technologies, no rating bars.
  • Bullets under each job: the same terms in context, with outcomes.
